APC SmartUPSs do basic power line conditioning and offer decent uninterruptable power at a decent price, so that's what I get.Hopefully if anything I said is inaccurate someone more knowledgeable will correct me. Good UPSs also do this to some degree, but standalone line conditioners usually do a better job (until you start buying VERY good UPSs). What's a "line conditioner"? Ī line conditioner smoothes out the spikes and sags in the supplied power (usually by adjusting voltage) so that the equipment attached to it gets a very "clean" power level. Originally posted by DarylF2:Also, do you possibly have somewhat flaky power in your area and not use a line conditioner or high-quality UPS? ĭon't think so. And unless you have AppleCare, you're screwed because Apple charges a grand to replace the boards.Does Apple use cheap components or do some of their designs run too hot? It's also killed two batteries in short order.About 50% of my Mac-owning friends, family, and colleagues have experienced logic board failures with their computer. My MB Pro logic board had to be replaced because of a GPU failure (although I think that was NVidia's fault). My old graphite iMac G3 failed due to flyback transformer. Another with with a Snow iMac died because of a failed logic board. Two friends with iBook G4s and one with a lampshade iMac have suffered logic board failures. One of them has had the two replacement boards fail (defective capacitors).

I know three people all with iMac G5s (but different versions) that have suffered multiple logic board failures. Does Apple have a quality control problem or intrinsic design flaws with many of their computers?I've been seeing and hearing about a lot of logic board failures.
